Gayle Riedmann was interviewed by the Chicago Tribune regarding a measure in front of the state health board to permit free-standing birth centers in Illinois. Gayle is a certified Nurse-Midwife and has been involved for years in trying to open birth centers outside the hospital's domain. The article discusses the many concerns and opposition by state organizations against about them in the past. It appears the handwriting is on the wall and this is the way of the future in delivering babies as opposition steps aside. Read the article here.

As reported by our Aunt Renie, her daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Vince Marullo, were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. They live on Long Island and lost power, phones and gas for several days. Aunt Renie writes, "Vince hooked up the generator for heat, he built a box around it so it wouldn't get damaged or blown away. They were the first in the neighborhood to get gas and it was because of Vince's medical condition--his Diabetes. Hot water is a must to prevent of infection. A lot of their neighbors had water up to the front of their houses and some got water it in their homes. Sue and Vince were the most fortunate cause their house is on a little bank, just enough to protect it. Now when the lights flicker they think they are losing their electricity again. Guess the lights flicker a lot. Their sump pumps are working over time." The irony to the storm is her sister's name is Sandy. We're glad it has ended well for them.
